Raleigh State Fairgrounds Camping

Raleigh State Fairgrounds

Our son landed in Raleigh, NC for business on Monday for a week long stay.  Because Raleigh is only 2-1/2 hrs away from us, and we haven’t seen him since last fall, we decided to make the trip for a short visit.   We knew we couldn’t take too much time away from our business since we were gone for 4 days last week and have a long trip planned up to Ohio in April, so we planned a quick overnight with our Minnie.  It was still parked at our shop from our Hilton Head trip so all we really needed to do is throw a few things in and hitch-up and go.   Having a dog makes spur of the moment traveling a little more complicated and this is where our Minnie really comes in so handy.

While looking at campgrounds in the area we discovered there are some really nice state parks a little north from here.   But since this was only going to be an overnight, we opted for staying in the city at the fairgrounds..   I had researched on-line for reviews and most were favorable.

The campground is mainly just a place to park.  There are no picnic tables or anything fancy.  When you get there you have to call a number and let the security guard know you’ve arrived.  They do not take reservations.  There are 100 full hook-ups where we stayed and the guard told us there are 250 more spots across the street.  The lot we were at was the newest.  I asked if it ever filled up and he told us that only when the State Fair is on, or some major events are at the fairgrounds does it fill up (only 2 or 3 times a year).  This particular night there were not all that many campers and we really had a wide selection of spaces.  I did notice that if this were a busy time of year we would be parked pretty close to a neighbor.

  • $30/night.  No check in times or check-out time.  The guard basically told us as long as we don’t spend another overnight we could leave as late as we wanted to.
  • No cable service,  but there is free (unsecured) Wi-Fi for the entire fairgrounds. We also noticed we received 51 stations thru the antenna for the tv without cable.
  • There is a dump station, but since we have full hook-up I don’t know why it’s here.
  • No bath facilities.
  • Charm Score 2
